Who Is a Good Candidate?
Fillers are used to treat deep lines and wrinkles of the face as well as for augmentation of the cheeks, lips and undereye area. They come in a variety of forms, and depending on which one is chosen, can last anywhere from 6 months to one year. They are made of most commonly hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occuring substance in the body. They are usually injected in the office. Unless you have had fillers before, I usually meet with patients for a consultation first, and then we schedule an appointment for injections. Depending on the body area being treated, injections take anywhere from 15-30 minutes. It is advisable not to plan any important events for 2 weeks after your filler injection, as you may have some bruising and swelling during that time.
Filler injections are done in the clinic with patients either sitting or laying down, depending on the areas being treated. The injection site is cleaned with alcohol, and the syringe with filler is injected with a very thin needle in small aliquots into the target area. Often the filler material will contain local anesthetic, so after about 30 seconds any pain associated with the injection will be significantly reduced. There is usually pain just from the needle and injection itself; most patients do not report this procedure as painful after the actual injections are done.
Depending on the type of filler, there may be some swelling, some of which happens immediately. Patients will usually go home and ice the areas for a couple of hours afterwards. This can help decrease bruising as well. Most patients are up and about their normal business right after injections. Massage is not needed unless specifically recommended by your treatment provider. As your body breaks down and eliminates the filler material, your injected areas will slowly return to their pre-injection size with no permanent effects from the filler.
